Coconut Oil for EVERYTHING….almost.

YES, Coconut Oil for EVERYTHING….almost.

It has been just over a month and Coconut Oil is now officially a staple in our home.  I use it for cooking, as a make-up remover, moisturizer, hair conditioner, and lip-balm.  I think that the Trader Joe’s brand is the best, so I find myself stocking up on it like a Doomsday-Prepper.
I first read about the many benefits of Coconut Oil in, Forever Young, by Dr. Nicholas Perricone.  He discusses the many benefits of cooking with Coconut Oil instead of butter and other vegetable oils.

So long story short; Coconut Oil contains a high amount of saturated fat, which gives it a bad rap, but Coconut Oil is easier digested than butter and other vegetable oils, and the anti-microbial properties in Coconut Oil help tremendously with digestion and immunity.  So, the good outweighs the bad here.  Even if you don’t like the smell or flavor of Coconut, there is still might be enough good supporting evidence to give it a chance.

The anti-microbial properties in Coconut Oil also make it a great choice for an overnight moisturizer and eye-make-up remover.  It won’t clog your pores and your skin will look AMAZING in the morning.  It is a fabulous deep conditioning treatment as well!  In many countries, it is used daily as a shine serum or conditioner.  I use it on a bi-weekly basis (in-between my Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger treatments).  I melt it down, apply, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then shampoo and condition as usual.

I find that when I am cooking with it, there is always a bit extra to rub in my hands, my elbows, smile-lines, ends of my hair and my lips; which makes cooking very conditioning.  If you enjoy the flavor and smell of Coconut Oil, you will be in heaven.  I think it makes the house smell wonderful when I am cooking with it and it adds a smooth sweet finish to everything.  I have used it instead of Olive Oil, with sautéing most dishes.  It also works really well at high heats, so you don’t have to worry about it burning like butter. (ever ruin a roux?!?)

The consistency reminds me of translucent Crisco, and you may have to melt it down to get a proper measurement.  For skin application, just take a small chunk and rub it between your fingers to melt a bit and then apply.

Have you found any natural products around the house that double as a beauty product as well?  Please share!

Hagoyah and Paul Mitchell

If it isn’t already obvious, we LOVE Paul Mitchell!!

It would take quite a few blog entries to really divulge where all this love is coming from.
For now, we will just highlight a few of our favorite things about Paul Mitchell.

  • Paul Mitchell is MADE IN THE USA and is the ONLY privately owned manufacturer in the entire Professional Beauty Industry. We think that speaks volumes to their integrity and commitment.

Why should you care?

  • There are lots of manufacturers of “professional” beauty products, most of which are owned by L’Oreal, Estee Lauder  or Proctor & Gamble.  These companies also “specialize” in manufacturing other products such as pharmaceuticals and detergents.

We’re not saying that they are less effective in achieving your beauty goals, we’re just giving you the inside scoop.

  • Co-Founder and CEO, John Paul DeJoria is a truly remarkable human-being.  We think it’s safe to say that John Paul Mitchell Systems is one of the most philanthropic companies in the world.

“Success unshared is failure.” ~ John Paul DeJoria

  • Did you know that they were the first company in the professional beauty industry to stand up against animal testing?
  • Every purchase from the Paul Mitchell Tea-Tree line goes towards planting a tree with American Forest.  We’ve planted over 150,000 trees!!
  • The Paul Mitchell Awapuhi farm is fully sustainable, runs on solar power and has been since 1987!
  • Thinking Globally and Acting Locally, Paul Mitchell has helped to feed thousands of children, preserved our natural resources, and  has stood up for equal rights.

“When you choose Paul Mitchell, you’re supporting many charity efforts around the world.”

  • Lastly, we firmly believe that Paul Mitchell products are the finest haircare products in the WORLD!  duh!

Supermodel (and avid Yogi), Christy Turlington
has been quoted saying,
“I feel sincerely that beauty largely comes from within.”

We couldn’t agree more!  We also feel that practicing Yoga plays a big role in making one feel beautiful, in addition to all of the other wonderful benefits Yoga has to offer.

It’s true, being a bit granola, is way glamorous!
