Sea Spray for Skin

At Hagoyah, we’re big fans of natural ingredients. And this sea spray for skin combines two of our favorites: natural sea salt and magnesium!  Together, they nourish the skin and strengthen the body.

Both sea salt and saltwater have long histories of serving the body, in beauty recipes and skin therapies. This combination, when used in a therapeutic way, even has its own name: thalassotherapy. That’s the therapeutic use of saltwater, for short!

Many people notice reduced acne and a more refined, clear complexion when using sea salt for skin. Sea salt typically appears in salt scrubs, but this gentle sea spray can be left on to continuously nourish the skin. The minerals in salt can also tighten your skin and reduce wrinkles.

Aside from its beauty benefits, this sea spray leaves skin feeling refreshed and light. It can serve as a facial toner or as an all-over skin nourishing spray. If you’ve never tried salt on the skin, try this simple and inexpensive recipe!

Lemons

If you were given a 10 pound bag of lemons, what would you do with it?

We always have a choice…. to make lemonade, cocktails, or even a skin-cleanser.  We also have the choice to just throw out the lemons or even let them rot.  What you do with life’s lemons is a reflection of how you handle life’s challenges.  You always have a choice when it comes to what to do with your lemons.

Below are some of our favorite lemon solutions!

Lemons for skin care
The acid in lemons help to clear bacteria, the natural enzymes help to exfoliate the skin, and the vitamin C will lighten the skin, aiding to even out skin tone and clear hyperpigmentation.  There is lots of ways to apply, I recommend just squeezing some lemon juice on a cotton ball, apply to your skin, wait 5-10 minutes, rinse and moisturize.  You can feel it working, I promise.

Limoncello Recipe
(San Francisco Chronicle)
  • 15 thick skinned lemons (Eureka, Lisbon, or Citron)
  • 2 bottles of 100-proof vodka
  • 4-1/2 cups of sugar
  • 5-cups of water
Instructions:
Wash the lemons in hot water before you start. Remove the peel with a vegetable peeler, removing all white pith on the back of the peel by scraping with a knife, and put the peels in a 4-quart Mason jar.
Add 1 bottle of vodka and stir. Cover the jar, date it, and put it to rest in a dark cabinet at room temperature.
After 40 days, take out the vodka-lemon mixture. In a saucepan set over high heat, stir the sugar and water together and boil for 5 minutes. Let the sugar syrup cool completely in the pan, about 10 minutes. Add the sugar syrup to the vodka-lemon mixture along with the second bottle of vodka. Stir well to combine. Replace the cover on the jar and note the finish date. Return it to the dark cabinet and store for 40 more days.
At Day 80, remove the limoncello from the cabinet. Strain the mixture and discard the lemon peel.
Pour into clean, unused bottles with caps or decorative corked bottles. Store the bottles in the pantry, but put one bottle at a time in the freezer until ready. Makes approximately 3 quarts.  It can also make a great gift.

Sugar Free Lemonade

  • 2 Cups of fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 8 cups of water
  • 2 teaspoons of stevia liquid concentrate or 1/2-2/3 cup of agave syrup
  • Ice Cubes and Lemon for Garnish
Makes approximately 10 8-ounce servings.
Add Vodka to make it a refreshing adult beverage.  🙂

Coconut Oil for EVERYTHING….almost.

YES, Coconut Oil for EVERYTHING….almost.

It has been just over a month and Coconut Oil is now officially a staple in our home.  I use it for cooking, as a make-up remover, moisturizer, hair conditioner, and lip-balm.  I think that the Trader Joe’s brand is the best, so I find myself stocking up on it like a Doomsday-Prepper.
I first read about the many benefits of Coconut Oil in, Forever Young, by Dr. Nicholas Perricone.  He discusses the many benefits of cooking with Coconut Oil instead of butter and other vegetable oils.

So long story short; Coconut Oil contains a high amount of saturated fat, which gives it a bad rap, but Coconut Oil is easier digested than butter and other vegetable oils, and the anti-microbial properties in Coconut Oil help tremendously with digestion and immunity.  So, the good outweighs the bad here.  Even if you don’t like the smell or flavor of Coconut, there is still might be enough good supporting evidence to give it a chance.

The anti-microbial properties in Coconut Oil also make it a great choice for an overnight moisturizer and eye-make-up remover.  It won’t clog your pores and your skin will look AMAZING in the morning.  It is a fabulous deep conditioning treatment as well!  In many countries, it is used daily as a shine serum or conditioner.  I use it on a bi-weekly basis (in-between my Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger treatments).  I melt it down, apply, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then shampoo and condition as usual.

I find that when I am cooking with it, there is always a bit extra to rub in my hands, my elbows, smile-lines, ends of my hair and my lips; which makes cooking very conditioning.  If you enjoy the flavor and smell of Coconut Oil, you will be in heaven.  I think it makes the house smell wonderful when I am cooking with it and it adds a smooth sweet finish to everything.  I have used it instead of Olive Oil, with sautéing most dishes.  It also works really well at high heats, so you don’t have to worry about it burning like butter. (ever ruin a roux?!?)

The consistency reminds me of translucent Crisco, and you may have to melt it down to get a proper measurement.  For skin application, just take a small chunk and rub it between your fingers to melt a bit and then apply.
